Space agencies sponsor basic Closed Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) technology development programs with a view to address the needs required by long-term human spaceflight missions.
NTE-SENER has contributed to these programs with a variety of engineering support activities, ranging from system studies on the feasibility of a Closed Ecological & Habitability Center (CES/HABLAB) and of a Greenhouse on Mars' surface, to the engineering development of biomass sensors and control systems for CELSS pilot plant facilities.
Furthermore, the company is an engineering service provider for the MELISSA CELSS test bed laboratory, ESA's external facility located at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), which is one of the few facilities of its kind in the world.
